What is liftgate delivery?

A liftgate is a movable platform affixed to the rear of freight trailers or trucks, facilitating the loading and unloading of goods in the absence of a loading dock. During cargo loading the liftgate is lowered to the ground. The freight is moved onto the liftgate using a pallet jack manually or forklift. After loading, the liftgate is retracted and folded parallel to the back of the truck. During cargo unloading the liftgate is extended outwards. Freight is moved onto the liftgate using a pallet jack and then lowered to the ground.
A liftgate delivery refers to a service provided by transportation companies usually for an additional cost, typically for larger or heavier items. This is particularly useful when the destination lacks a loading dock or forklift, making it easier to unload items safely and efficiently. When the delivery truck equipped with a liftgate arrives at a destination, the liftgate is used to lower the item from the truck to the ground. Once the item is on the ground, it is the responsibility of the consignee (party receiving the shipment) to bring the item into the location.
