The U.S. EPA has announced new regulations that impact commercial refrigeration equipment. Bush Refrigeration is providing this notice to help our customers prepare.
What’s Changing?
Beginning January 1, 2026, it will be illegal to install new refrigeration systems that use older high-GWP refrigerants such as:
- R-404A
- R-448A
- R-449A
Any equipment using these refrigerants must be installed and operational before the deadline to remain compliant.
EPA Technology Transitions Final Rule (Excerpt)
Subsector | GWP Limit | Compliance Date | Requirement |
Retail food – remote condensing units (≥200 lb charge, excluding high-temp cascade) |
150 | January 1, 2026 | New installations prohibited above limit |
Retail food – remote condensing units (<200 lb charge or high-temp cascade) |
300 | January 1, 2026 | New installations prohibited above limit |

What Comes Next?
Going forward, all new refrigeration systems must use A2L refrigerants designed to meet federal requirements, such as:
- R-454A
- R-454C
- R-455A
Notice on Refrigerant Regulations
Starting January 1, 2026, the EPA will no longer allow installation of refrigeration systems that use high-GWP refrigerants such as R-404A, R-448A, and R-449A. Any such equipment must be installed and operational before that date to remain compliant. Going forward, only A2L refrigerants will be permitted in new installations. Please plan ahead to ensure compliance.
What You Should Do
✔ Plan ahead now to avoid installation delays as the deadline approaches.
✔ Confirm project timelines — ensure any R-404A, R-448A, or R-449A systems are installed before January 1, 2026.
✔ Explore compliant options — contact Bush Refrigeration to learn more about upcoming A2L refrigerant systems.
A2L Refrigerants – Quick FAQ
What is an A2L refrigerant?
A2Ls are a new class of refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP) than traditional refrigerants. They are classified as mildly flammable, which means they require proper handling and installation but are safe when used correctly.
Why are they required?
The EPA is phasing out high-GWP refrigerants such as R-404A, R-448A, and R-449A. Starting January 1, 2026, refrigeration systems that use these refrigerants can no longer be installed.
Which A2Ls will replace them?
Common replacements include:
- R-454A
- R-454C
- R-455A
What does this mean for me?
If you plan to purchase equipment using R-404A, R-448A, or R-449A, it must be installed and operational before January 1, 2026. After that date, all new systems must use A2L refrigerants to stay compliant.
How can Bush Refrigeration help?
